St. James Winery Peachy Sangria

This is not the first time St. James Winery has released the limited, seasonal wine Peachy Sangria. This wine is released in the summer because nothing speaks to this season better than sweet, ripe peaches and Peachy Sangria delivers just that. The sweet flavor from St. James Winery Peach fruit wine is blended to perfection with Raspberry and Moscato wines. The combination culminates into being a sweet wine perfect for sipping on the patio during a warm summer day.

To further share info about this wine, we decided to interview St. James Winery Executive Winemaker, Andrew Meggitt, to learn more about Peachy Sangria. Here’s how the Q&A session went.

What made you first decide to make Peachy Sangria?
It was an R and D (Research and Development) project in the lab about 5 to 6 years ago. We wanted to develop a wine that had a different flavor profile and feel to our traditional fruit wines.

What are three food pairing ideas for Peachy Sangria?
Pulled barbecue pork, chicken quesadillas and any red sauce pizza.

Aside from color, is there much difference between this year’s release and past releases of Peachy Sangria?
Taste and alcohol (ABV) are very similar. The color will vary year-to-year, but it does not affect the flavor.

Is there anything else you would like to add?
This began as a conversation within the production team. It started life as red, white and blue and evolved into less of the red fruits. Raspberry is still there to give it the acid it needs to balance the sweetness. Enjoy!

Well, there you have it! For many, this is a beloved seasonal wine that tends to sell out quickly. If you haven’t had the pleasure of experiencing Peachy Sangria, then you probably want to try and find it while it’s available in stores that carry St. James Winery selections, in our Tasting Room and online. Cheers!

Did you realize that St. James Winery practices sustainability every day?

In celebration of Earth Day, here’s a list of how our partner Public House Brewing Company and the team at St. James Winery take care of the planet we call home.

  • Recycle – cardboard, plastic, glass, aluminum
  • Solid waste from both businesses used as compost in the vineyards
  • Transition to LED lighting last year throughout both the winery and brewery
  • Electricity 208V 3 phase minimum through production facilities for energy efficiency
  • Insulated piping for glycol refrigeration system in the winery for energy efficiency
  • Vinwizard adjusts pump speeds depending on demand (Artificial Intelligence for energy efficiency)
  • Use of a fine-tuned irrigation and soil monitoring system so we use less water in our vineyards.
  • Beehive addition to our vineyard perimeter and adding three to four more this year. They help pollinate our cover crops
  • Wildflowers and other natives planted (cover crops) in order to encourage diversity of insect populations in the vineyard area to help with compaction, pests and some for aiding nitrogen levels in the soil
  • All wine tank bottoms filtered/reclaimed and solid waste composted to avoid stressing water treatment facilities
  • Vineyard pruning and hedging equipment redesigned to do two rows at once – lowering diesel usage
  • Using UTVs instead of trucks in order to reduce carbon footprint (less gas) to transport crew and equipment
  • New tractors run in economy – using half the diesel trucks for certain jobs
  • High-efficiency boiler in the winery cellar and bottling room
  • Move to aluminum cans for the brewery for better recyclability
  • Spent grain for cattle
  • Insulated tanks in the brewery
  • Reclaim water from heat exchanger for brewing water
  • Low-pressure boiler in the brewery – sized appropriately for energy efficiency
  • All to-go materials for food from the brewery are recyclable. Just say no to styrofoam

To continue the work of preserving the cultural and environmental sustainability of our community we formed the Friendship School Foundation. Through our partnership with this foundation, we are able to invest in and work to sustain the cultural heritage of our vineyards, our craft and our community. We love the land we work and practice sustainability wherever we are able to.

The above list are just a few of our sustainability efforts today and with the help of our foundation, we are always investigating how we can do even more. So, the next time you lift a glass of your favorite St. James Winery selection know you are supporting a Missouri winery and craft brewery, its community and our shared environment. Cheers!

Our Strawberry Moscato is back after we sold out at a record rate last year! We have ramped up production to make more of this limited release, fan-favorite for the 2020 spring season. As the weather starts to warm up and we see the first signs of spring, nothing pairs better with patio relaxation than this light and refreshing blush wine.

Our cellar crew carefully blended our award-winning Strawberry and Moscato wines to create this unique taste experience. This wine envelopes the palate with naturally sweet, bright strawberry flavors that are delicately muted by our semi-dry, estate-grown Moscato introducing a layer of subtle apricot to the mix. This creates a light, fresh taste experience that is free of added colors or flavors.

This wine pairs beautifully with pork tenderloin or pork cutlets and would be perfect with an Easter meal. Strawberry Moscato also pairs well with milk chocolate such as Easter bunnies! With a beautiful label, this wine would also be perfect for a Mother’s day gift.

Look for this limited selection in our St. James Winery Tasting Room or in a store near you. Remember, with our seasonal wines, they will only be available as supplies last.

Releasing today, July 1, is a seasonal wine perfect for relaxing poolside with friends – St. James Winery Strawberry Rosé. A premium blend of 100% real strawberry fruit with light rosé creates a refreshing blush wine.

This wine is delicately sweet with the initial taste on the palate of true, tart strawberry. With additional sips, you’ll be whisked away by the aromas of the fruit and gentle honeysuckle with the taste sweetening slightly to reveal the true strawberry essence.

Serve this wine chilled and try pairing it with grilled pork steaks and a summer staple, Caprese salad.

This limited selection is available in the St. James Winery Tasting Room, online or in a store near you soon. As with all our seasonal wines, Strawberry Rosé will be available as supplies last.

St. James Winery’s Executive Winemaker, Andrew Meggitt, and his team (both vineyard and cellar) have developed a line of specialty wines for your enjoyment. These wines are produced in a small batch and will be available while supplies last. Two whites and two reds make up this limited line of 2017 vintages.

The two sweet whites include our Late Harvest Traminette and Late Harvest Chardonel. The 2017 harvest season in the St. James Winery vineyards presented the ideal conditions for a late ripening season which produced the perfect fruit for these unique wines.

The Late Harvest Traminette was made in the hope of capturing all the best flavors of Traminette, with the concentration that we get from late harvest grapes. Our executive winemaker noted that it is notoriously difficult to get Traminette very ripe, but the ideal growing season for 2017 ultimately produced a high quality wine. It is the first time St. James Winery has ever crafted this wine and we’re in love with the flavors.

For Late Harvest Chardonel, the last time St. James Winery presented this wine was in 2007. The 2017 vintage is a wonderful example of a late harvest Chardonel with concentrated apricot and supple fruit flavors.

Both of these whites are great served chilled with a variety of foods including brie, poached pears or even crème brûlée.

The two reds in the new specialty line are dessert wines that provide warmth with their elevated alcohol levels. These wines are an ideal night cap for a cold winter’s night. Imagine curling up with your favorite book, in front of the fireplace and sipping on one of these reds from a sherry glass.

The 2017 Blackberry Dessert Wine was a research and development project that all the production team contributed to. This dessert-style wine is a 50/50 blend of an experiment of two wine making techniques: one traditional and one innovative. The result is a sweet, warming sensation for the palate.

Our Fiddler’s Duet Dessert Wine is a blend of Norton and Rougeoun combining to create a port-style wine. St. James Winery first crafted this style of wine in 2006. From there, Fiddler’s Duet was born providing a mildly sweet taste to the palate.

Our tasting room associates recommend the process of tasting this wine in three parts. The initial sip will provide the palate with the elevated alcohol, while still presenting the notes of the wine. During the second taste, the wine’s profile develops on the palate revealing the complexity of the blend. With the third sip, we recommend the pairing of dark chocolate. This takes the wine to a new level of decadence.

Visit our Tasting Room and ask about sampling or visit our online store to discover these wines more in depth.

We invite you to a complimentary tasting of this dry red wine on Thursday, November 15 in our Tasting Room from 4 – 6 p.m. This year’s Winemaker Series Nouveau displays aromas and flavors of black cherries and plums, and we will be pairing it with Irish Stew from our campus partner’s kitchen at Public House Brewing Company.

In honor of this year’s harvest, we not only created a our annual Nouveau wine, but also a three-part video series covering the harvest from our St. James Winery vineyards. The videos are posted below for you to enjoy prior to our Nouveau Release Party.

The tradition of creating a Nouveau wine originated in the Beaujolais region of France. Beaujolais Nouveau began as an early release wine to celebrate the end of harvest with the intention of it being enjoyed young. Under French law, it is to be released on the third Thursday in November after each harvest.

In the early 1960’s some of the local vignerons saw potential to promote the wine with a contest to see who could get the first bottle to Paris. From there it spread throughout Europe, and by the 1980’s North Americans had joined the party followed by Asia in the 1990’s.

It’s so popular that one third of Beaujolais’ production is dedicated to the Nouveau style with over 28 million bottles produced annually. Following in this French tradition, St. James Winery began creating our own regional Nouveau over 20 years ago right here in the Meramec Highlands.

We hope you will join our St. James Winery family and be a part of this tradition to help us celebrate our bountiful harvest! Until then, enjoy the below video series where our Executive Winemaker, Andrew Meggitt, discusses the topics of weather conditions affecting harvest, quality vs. quantity and farm to table agriculture in Missouri.

It takes the hard work and effort of an entire vineyard and cellar crew to produce our internationally awarded wines. Discover how the fruit is carefully cultivated to ensure the integrity of the wines you know and love!

Halloween is almost here! Make your party frightful with our devilishly delicious cocktails to serve your ghosts… ahem… guests.

Our Black Widow Punch is a hauntingly dark drink perfect for your Monster Mash. For a svelte, mysterious presentation, we recommend serving in a martini glass with dry ice. Featuring our Blackberry fruit wine, this drink is sure to satisfy a deadly hunger for something sweet.

Next, is our Redrum Sangeria. This killer recipe calls for either our Pioneer Red or Friendship School Red wines and presents a blood red color that is beautifully presented in a any witch’s cauldron. Use orange slices for garnish to add a punch of seasonal color.

Lastly, may we suggest trying our Not-So-Poisoned Apple Punch. Unlike Snow White, your guests can experience this delicious punch without fear. Try this recipe with our Moscato or Riesling wines and add any ripe, red apples of your choice.

All of these wines are available in stores, online and in our Tasting Room. Happy Halloween from the St. James Winery family!
