Velvet Red and BBB Pork Steak Pairing

Be a backyard hero this BBQ season with four expertly paired St. James Winery wine and barbecue food pairings!

It’s time to fire up the BBQ grill, folks! Spring is here to stay. Feel it in the air, in the sweet smells of new plant life, and in the sounds of peepers in the evenings.  Spring in the midwest means warm afternoons, cool evenings, and delicious food off the grill. Whether you’re barbecuing for one, or hosting a neighborhood block party, you’ll need a delightful beverage to accompany all of that mouth-watering barbecued goodness. We’re here to help you stock the cooler with the wines that are sure to make you a backyard hero this season.

Velvet Red + Pork Steak

First up is a classic Midwestern pairing of Velvet Red wine and BBQ Pork Steak. The smooth, sweet, fruity flavors in Velvet Red are the perfect match to the full-flavored, smokey regional favorite pork steak.  Preparing a tender, juicy, fall-off-the-bone pork steak is an art. Likewise, here at St. James Winery, we believe there is art in the way we sustainably grow grapes and craft wine. Velvet Red has been crafted by our family-owned winery for 50 years, and the quality and love shine in each sip. You don’t even have to be a sweet wine lover to appreciate the depth of this pairing, especially when the sauce is on the spicy side. In our circles, no barbecue is complete without a glass or two of chilled Velvet Red wine.

Friendship School White + Burgers and Dogs

Next up on the grill is the all-time favorite of hamburgers and hotdogs. We’re pairing this backyard, crowd-pleasing duo with Friendship School White wine. We love the way the crisp, clean finish of this semi-dry white wine complements the smoky meats and the array of toppings we add to hamburgers and hotdogs that make each unique. Topping your burger or dog with grilled onions and cheese – Friendship School White! Plan on piling up your burger or dog with ketchup, mustard, and pickles – Friendship School White! It’s so delicious and so versatile that it just might be our overall favorite pairing.

Sparkling Mango + Chicken

Now it’s time to come in hot with a savory, flavorful beer-can chicken – except we’re switching it up! Instead of beer, we love our whole chickens on the grill cooked atop a can of Sparkling Mango fruit wine. The chicken, seasoned on the spicy side with cumin, chili powder, garlic, salt, black pepper, and paprika, takes on just the right amount of that all-natural mango flavor from the wine as it cooks. We serve the chicken de-boned, topped with fresh cilantro, and alongside a cold can of Sparkling Mango fruit wine. This is the pairing that’ll surprise you and keep you coming back for more!

Norton + Rib-Eyes

As the last pairing on the list, we thought it appropriate to treat ourselves. For this special dinner, we paired Moondance Farm Rib-Eyes with Winemaker Series Norton 42. This award-winning bold, dry red wine is full of old-world charm and dark fruit aromas. Its subtle oak and integrated tannin structure are the perfect complements to the marbling and rich beefy flavors of the Rib-Eye steak. Seasoned only with sea salt and coarse ground black pepper, the organically grown beef was simply made for this beautiful wine, which is crafted using the highest quality blocks of Norton grapes in our St. James, Missouri vineyard. The way in which the flavors meld together as you savor each juicy bite and each balanced sip is simply magic.

We’d love to hear from you!

Are you a St. James Winery wine and barbecue food pairing expert? Do you have a barbecue and wine pairing that makes you a backyard hero and don’t see it on our list? Share it with us in a comment! We’d love to experience the flavors!

Cranberry Wine

Inspired by our love of the season and Cranberry Wine, we’ve compiled a few of our favorite recipes in one handy guide. We invite you to cook, bake, mix, and shake your way through the holidays with us.

Cranberry Wine Poached Pears are a beautiful and aromatic addition to your holiday celebration. In addition to being festive and flavorful, we especially love that this dish is prepared in the slow cooker – keeping that all-important stovetop space open. Enjoy alongside vanilla ice cream or whipped mascarpone cheese for an extra decadent experience.

Crantini Cocktail is our unique spin on the classic martini. Crafted with just three ingredients – Cranberry wine, vodka, and fresh lemon or lime, the holiday flavor and color shine brilliantly. Simple and fun to create, the Crantini is a crowd pleaser and a show-stopper at gatherings large and small.

Cranberry Cakes are made from scratch little bundles of pure joy. These cakes are baked in either a mini bundt pan or a muffin tin, the individual-sized cakes are moist, delicious, and pretty enough to gift.

Cozy Cranberry Mulled Wine is a Saturday afternoon staple around the fireplace during the cold winter months. We recommend enjoying this delicious holiday-inspired mulled wine with your favorite companion and a fuzzy blanket.

Cranberry Holiday Sangria is our newest addition to the collection and was created in collaboration with our friends at Just a Taste in St. James, Missouri. A thoughtful blend of your choice of red wine, Raspberry wine, and Cranberry wine, the Cranberry Holiday Sangria is a flavor experience you won’t want to miss this season.

We are looking forward to your return!

For your safety and ours, we have instituted new policies to ensure an excellent visit with us at the St. James Winery for our reopening on Wed., May 6, 2020.

The CDC, Federal Government, and county commission have provided us with guidelines for operation to ensure your safety and wellness as we transition back into service.

We are preparing for your return by instituting the following practices:

  • Safe Social Distancing and Promotion of General Wellness
    • We ask that social distancing be observed by all parties.  Please respect and maintain a 6-foot distance from each other at all times. Our staff will be taking the extra step to promote wellness in our Tasting Room by wearing masks and gloves while providing you with a wonderful experience during your visit.

    • Our team will provide you with sanitizing stations upon entry, and we will be sanitizing all service areas several times per day.

Please check out our Plan Your Visit page for more details of our current Tasting Room offerings.

Amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, we’ve been recommended by the CDC to stay home. St. James Winery has brought people together and allowed them to share experiences over their favorite glass of wine for 50 years, and we want to continue to do this even during these trying times. With that, here’s a list of four ways to inspire you to connect with the ones you love while staying in.

1. Try our new Sparkling Fruit Wines. We recently released four new wines that are fun and sparkling variations of our popular fruit wines and now come in 375ml cans. These lighter, lower ABV versions have a sparkling effect and come in four flavors – Blackberry, Peach, Strawberry and Mango. For a night in idea, try the canned sparkling version and the traditional 750ml bottled wine to compare the differences. You could also do a blind taste test to see if your partner can guess the flavor! To purchase, you can find them online here in a special sampler combo pack.

2. Get outside. Staying home and social distancing doesn’t mean staying inside. As the spring weather warms up, go outside and enjoy the season. Sit around a fire with a glass of red wine, have a midday picnic with our limited release Strawberry Moscato, or sit on the porch or patio and watch the sunset with your special someone and favorite wine. Sunshine and warmer weather are sure to lighten everyone’s moods after a long winter.

3. Fruit wine mixology fun. Our popular fruit wines are made with 100% real fruit and are perfect to use as a base for mixology for some fun wine cocktails. Browse our website for different recipes such as Blackberry Mojito, Strawberry Lemonade, or Blueberry Gin Fitz. You can also have fun at home mixing up your own recipe. It’s simple –

    • Start with one of our eight fruit wines.
    • Add a spirit of your choice such as tequila, vodka, gin, or rum. Flavored spirits can add in another layer of flavors like vanilla or citrus!
    • Add some optional club soda or lemon-lime soda to give it some fizz.
    • Give it a splash of citrus such as lemon or lime.

The possibilities are endless and you can create some fun recipe inventions! Snap a picture of your recipe and share it with friends and family on social media. Maybe, take a moment to tag @stjameswinery while you’re at it.

4. Host a virtual comparative tasting. Make sure you and your friends have the same wines on hand and meet online!
For example, you and your friends could compare a Chardonnay to our Chardonel.

Or you could do a vertical tasting of the same wine but from different years. Currently, we have the following Norton wines available for purchase online:
Norton 2004, 2006, 2009, 2011, 2014, 2011
Try the different wines, take notes, then compare and contrast to discuss them.

As a reminder, you can purchase our wine at stjameswinery.com, with curbside pick-up, and we just launched local delivery within the radius found on the map below. Read more about how our local delivery works here.

We hope these ideas will help you to sip back and relax in the weeks ahead! Cheers!

Our Strawberry Moscato is back after we sold out at a record rate last year! We have ramped up production to make more of this limited release, fan-favorite for the 2020 spring season. As the weather starts to warm up and we see the first signs of spring, nothing pairs better with patio relaxation than this light and refreshing blush wine.

Our cellar crew carefully blended our award-winning Strawberry and Moscato wines to create this unique taste experience. This wine envelopes the palate with naturally sweet, bright strawberry flavors that are delicately muted by our semi-dry, estate-grown Moscato introducing a layer of subtle apricot to the mix. This creates a light, fresh taste experience that is free of added colors or flavors.

This wine pairs beautifully with pork tenderloin or pork cutlets and would be perfect with an Easter meal. Strawberry Moscato also pairs well with milk chocolate such as Easter bunnies! With a beautiful label, this wine would also be perfect for a Mother’s day gift.

Look for this limited selection in our St. James Winery Tasting Room or in a store near you. Remember, with our seasonal wines, they will only be available as supplies last.

Harvest is a crazy, busy time of year at St. James Winery. Grapes come in by the truckload to swirl in the crush pit and flow through the juicer to move along into the cellar where they will become wine. The aromas alone are intoxicating. Vignoles grapes smell of fresh-cut-grass and honey. Concord fills the air with palpable homemade jam aromas.

Our vineyard and cellar crews work day and night to make it happen. St. James Winery has 185 acres of vineyard, with the annual harvest being the culmination of growing flavors that are crafted into award-winning wines you know and love. This is truly farm-to-table agriculture in the heart of Missouri wine country.

With us being a little over three weeks into our 2019 grape harvest, we thought it was time to give you an update on what’s happening by asking Executive Winemaker, Andrew Meggitt, a few questions.

Of the varieties you’ve harvested so far, which are you most excited about and why?
Valvin Muscat and Seyval. Valvin has an aroma profile that crosses from floral to tropical – bodes well for the wine (Valvin Muscat is in our Moscato).
Seyval has a depth and tannin structure that we have not seen in 5-6 years. (It) should transform into a very interesting wine (Seyval is in the Winemaker Series Seyval).

How are you feeling about the grape harvest so far (i.e. quality, aromas, taste, etc.)?
(I’m) never really happy with it until I see the wines in December, January.
Quality has been consistent through all the varieties, standouts are the Valvin Muscat and the Seyval.
The Vignoles is like a snow leopard. You know it’s there but can’t find it and when you do, it’s magnificent.

How much tonnage have you harvested so far?
1300 + / –

How has the weather impacted this year’s harvest?
Yes, the rain has made it very challenging. All varieties are 10-20 days later than normal.
The rain and cooler summer made harvesting condensed on the early varieties where we may have normally had 10 to 12 days – we had 10-24 hours between varieties.

The first night of harvest you mentioned wanting to focus on the winemaking more in-depth this year. Can you elaborate on this statement?
We have constantly pushed ourselves to run trials over the past few years. That’s where we get better results and see improvements in the wines. The last 2 years, we have not done this due to time and space constraints. We are experimenting on varieties this year.

What are some of the difficulties you’ve faced with this year’s harvest?
Weather – space – staff shortage – compressed harvest period – weather (did I mention that?).

How many employees are on the farm crew and how many employees are on the cellar crew?
Farm: 9 + Raul (Viticulturist) and Sam (Vineyard Manager)

Cellar: Myself + Aaron (Assistant Winemaker)  + Chaz (Winemaker) + Kendra (Lab) + 6
(3 of the farm staff are currently working in the cellar for harvest)

What is the estimated number of weeks remaining for harvest?
Approximately, 4 more weeks.

We hope you look forward to seeing how the 2019 varietals turn out. Until then, you can enjoy our current selections and as always, cheers!

The results are in and St. James Winery showed exceptionally well at the 2018 Tasters Guild International Consumer Wine Judging Competition. Held September 28-29 in Grand Rapids, Michigan, this competition is unique in that wine consumers evaluate the entered wines. While not judged by professionals, consumer participants receive instructional seminars on how to judge wine objectively. As an insurance that the consumer judges are giving fair, objective consideration to each wine, the panels are guided by an experienced advisor, who has evaluated wines at advanced levels.

St. James Winery received a medal for every wine entered into the competition, 30 in total. Of the awards, we received 10 Gold and 6 Double Gold. We feel this showing is a true reflection of what we already know – our wine is loved and highly valued by consumers. To celebrate, we are offering $5 off shipping when you buy any of the following double gold winners online and use coupon code WINNER until October 31, 2018.
