Introducing St. James Winery’s Winemaker Series

We are excited to announce our new line, the Winemaker Series. This collection features select wines that are carefully crafted by our St. James Winery Cellar Crew. The wines are handmade in small batches – typically anywhere from 50 to 500 cases – and feature the best-of-the-best varietals and blocks of grapes.

Fans of St. James Winery may recognize the varietals and blends as having been originally a part of our Podium Series, a line of innovative R&D wines. These selected wines have now been time-tested and have grown in popularity. They’ve been moved into the Winemaker Series to give the wines and our winemaking team recognition for their high quality grapes and winemaking skills.

The special packaging for the Winemaker Series, designed in-part by the winemakers themselves, highlights the high quality nature of the wine inside. The label notes details such as the growing region and even the vineyard blocks where the grapes were harvested. These factors contribute to the distinctive flavors captured in the bottle.

The first four wines released in the Winemaker Series include our 2016 vintages of Chambourcin, Dry Vignoles, Seyval and The Folly. There will be additional wines released into this line in the future.

2016 Chambourcin

Smoky and dark flavors entwined with raspberry and dark chocolate aromas, exposed on the palate as liquorice, tobacco and oak.

These four Winemaker Series wines will be released on Friday, May 19, 2017.

Join us for a complimentary wine tasting and food pairing that night from 5 to 8 p.m. held in the St. James Winery Tasting Room (540 State Route B, St. James, MO 65559), as part of our Little Italy of the Ozarks Festival. Each wine will be paired with bites from the Public House Brewing Company: St. James Taproom restaurant:

2015 Harvest Report

As of 9:19pm on August 11, harvest is on here at St. James Winery, and so far the results have been absolutely glorious!

“Throughout the summer, our Meramec Highlands region has received abundant rainfall,” said Andrew Meggitt, executive winemaker for St. James Winery. “The fruit quality has been outstanding, and the taste profile of the grapes is excellent. So far we’re very well pleased with the 2015 harvest.”

Already this season, St. James Winery has harvested Aromella, Niagara, Rougeon, Seyval, and Vincent. These blending grapes make up some of your favorite wines. For instance, Seyval finds its home in Pioneer White and Rougeon is found in our Friendship School Red.

We’re all harvesting Vignoles, but the waiting and ripening continue with blocks of Chambourcin and Norton grapes.

Celebrate Missouri Wine Month

With more than 100 wineries calling Missouri home, there are plenty of places to visit on a wine tasting tour to celebrate Missouri Wine Month. So grab some friends, get in the car, crank up the tuns, and enjoy a wine-tasting road trip!

St. James Winery and the Missouri State Parks Foundation have partnered to create a series of wines that celebrate the state’s exquisite state parks and help provide for their future. The first two Missouri State Parks Collector’s Edition wines, Johnson’s Shut-Ins Red and Montauk White, will be available online at www.MOStateParksWine.com October 10 for $19.99 a bottle and at StJamesWinery.com.

All proceeds from the Missouri State Parks Collector’s Edition wines will go to keep Missouri State Parks strong and sustainable.

A limited amount of each wine has been bottled, making these true collector’s items. The Missouri State Parks Collector’s Edition wines feature bold, specially designed labels inspired by vintage travel posters promoting breathtaking destinations. Future bottlings will showcase different Missouri state parks.

Harvest 2012 Wrap-up

Harvest 2012 is has proven to be one for the record books.

In all the years St. James Winery has been in operation, no one can ever remember harvest beginning in July, but thanks to very hot summer temperatures, the grapes were really on the grow.

Usually at the end of August, harvest crews would still be in the thick of things, but because an early start means an early finish, harvest 2012 is really winding down. The only grapes remaining in the vineyard are a few Chardonel grapes and, of course, the Norton, which always takes its good sweet time to ripen.

What does the harvest look like so far?

Around 1,200 tons of grapes — including Seyval, Niagara, Cayuga, Rougeon, Chambourcin, Valvin Muscat, Vignoles, Catawba, Chardonel, Concord — have hit the crush pad. We expect the Norton to be ready very, very soon.

Everyone in Missouri has complained about the heat and drought this summer (did we mention it’s was brutally hot here?), but because the vineyards are irrigated, the lack of rainfall was not problematic.

There was, however, another side effect to the drought. The minimal rains paired with our carefully controlled watering meant less disease pressure on the vines. There were fewer insects, and the rot issues which can arise with too much rain were non-existent.

Everyone on the winemaking staff is thrilled with the exceptional grape quality and outstanding flavor profiles, so we’re already looking forward to the third Thursday in November (the 15th this year!) when we release our 2012 Nouveau — a first taste of this season’s harvest!

Twenty-One a Lucky Number for St. James Winery

If St. James Winery were playing blackjack, it would have definitely come up a winner at the San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition by hitting 21! Twenty-one bottles of wine were shipped from St. James, Missouri to California for the competition, and when it was all said and done, each one of those bottles came home with a medal.

At this kick-off competition for the 2012 wine judging season, two of St. James Winery’s wines were honored with Best of Class Awards: Best of Class for Red Native American went to the 2009 Cynthiana, and Best of Class for Fruits went to St. James Winery’s Raspberry. The good news continued with gold medals for 2010 Seyval and Strawberry.

St. James Winery also received silver medals for its 2010 Traminette, 2010 Chardonel, 2010 Vignoles, Velvet White, Friendship School White, Blackberry, Peach, and Cherry, bringing the total of silver medals to eight. Rounding out the award-winning entries were nine bronze medals, which went to 2008 Norton, 2009 Chambourcin, Riesling, Velvet Red, Friendship School Red, Country Red, Country White, Pink Catawba, and Blueberry.

“When you send wine to a major competition like the one in San Francisco, and every single bottle comes back home with a medal,” said Peter Hofherr, CEO of St. James Winery, “that’s just a great way to start a new year! Especially when you consider that our wines were among 5,500 wines entered. This year San Francisco set a new American wine competition record for entries, and it’s the ninth consecutive year it will rank as the “Largest Competition of American Wines in the World. So, winning in San Francisco is big news!”

During the 2011 competition season, St. James Winery’s won a total of nine Best of Class, five double gold, and 42 gold medals, along with 126 silver and 76 bronze medals.
