St. James Winery is beginning its annual campaign against childhood hunger running through March and April 2014. After raising more than $14,000 last year, St. James Winery will once again donate a portion of proceeds from in-store sale of their wines to support the Missouri Food Bank Association and regional food bank child-feeding programs.
“Because March is National Nutrition Month, it’s a good time to bring childhood hunger issues to the forefront,” said Peter Hofherr CEO of St. James Winery. “In Missouri alone, thousands of children live in poverty. Hunger is an everyday reality for them, and it’s also a roadblock to learning.”
For at-risk kids, school breakfasts and lunches are often their only source of reliable nutrition; food is scarce on weekends and holidays. Missouri’s Food Bank programs offer backpacks filled with kid-friendly, nutritious foods to supplement their meals when there’s not enough to eat at home.
“For many years, the St. James Winery family has raised money for the backpack program that helps children here in St. James, Missouri,” Hofherr continued. “In 2013 we decided it was time for more Missourians to be aware of this issue. But awareness isn’t enough, which is why we encouraged them to take action with our End Childhood Hunger program. “
St. James Winery customers responded, and the program raised more than $14,000 in 2013 to significantly improve the quality of life for children around the state of Missouri.
St. James Winery, working in tandem with Missouri’s Food Bank Association, a coalition of the six Missouri food banks, seeks to provide hunger relief to every county in the state. It’s a simple philosophy: feed a child, build Missouri.
