Andrew Meggitt, Executive Winemaker at St. James Winery, has had exceptional year in wine competitions.

Wine has been called “poetry in a bottle.” If that’s the case, then the results of the 2014 wine competition season make it clear that St. James Winery’s Executive Winemaker, Andrew Meggitt, is a wine poet laureate.

“Last year during harvest, the fruit quality from our vineyards was superb, and I thought we could expect some excellent wines, but one would never imagine the record number of awards we have won this year,” said Andrew.

Outstanding is the word that describes the year Andrew and the St. James Winery winemaking team have had in international and national wine competitions in 2014, earning top honors at three international competitions, receiving 13 Best of Class awards, bringing home more than 70 gold medals. The winery was also named one of the Top 15 Wineries in the World.

“Our Riesling won the John Rose Award for the Best in Riesling at the Finger Lakes Wine Competition in March. In April, Friendship School White won Grand Champion at Pacific Rim. In May, it scored 95 points at Los Angeles, and in July, was named Best White Wine at Long Beach Grand Cru, “ Andrew said. “It’s been a very good year.”

In addition to the award winning Riesling and Friendship School White, St. James Winery’s Moscato earned Best of Class at three international competitions: Pacific Rim, Riverside, and Los Angeles. The 2013 Vignoles won two Best of Class awards: Riverside International and New World International. Friendship School Red and Riesling each won Best of Class at Pacific Rim, bringing the total for Best of Class awards to an impressive thirteen. Additional honors include two Double Gold medals for the 2013 Pioneer White at Finger Lakes and Florida.

“One thing worth noting is that we have a lot of different wines and flavor profiles that have been successful in competitions,” Andrew said. “ These wines are made from grapes grown and harvested here in St. James, proof that world class wines come from Missouri’s Ozark Highlands AVA.”

Andrew’s devotion to the Ozark Highlands AVA comes from his commitment to terroir: how the climate, soils and terrain affect the taste of wines from a particular region. Originally from New Zealand, Meggitt finished his university degree there before traveling the world for three years learning more about all the different winemaking styles and methodologies, and soaking in the way terroir influences the wine.

Andrew joined the winemaking staff at St. James Winery in 2002 and soon afterwards was named executive winemaker. Under his direction, St. James Winery has consistently been among the top four gold medal awarded wineries in the US. In 2013 he was named to IntoWine.com’s list of “Top 100 Most Influential U.S. Winemakers,” and in 2014 St. James Winery ranked in the top 15 on the World Association Wine and Spirits Writers and Journalists list of “Top Wineries of the World.”

Andrew quickly acknowledges the work of everyone at St. James Winery. “There are so many factors that have to come together to make a great wine. There’s the vineyard personnel whose work on the vines give us the best grapes possible. At harvest our crew brings the grapes in quickly and at the peak of flavor. Without all of them, I’m just a guy standing in front of a big empty tank. Then there’s the rest of the winemaking team, and the cellar staff and bottling line staff – our entire team plays a role in the wine that goes into the bottle.”

St. James, MO – St. James Winery recently placed in the top 15 of the World Association of Wine and Spirits Writers and Journalists annual list of the 100 Top Wineries in the World.

This year St. James Winery has won three major international competitions, received 13 Best of Class awards, and earned more than 70 gold medals, once again making St. James Winery one of the most awarded wineries, not just in the United States but among wineries around the world.

“Our goal is for our grapes and wines to reflect the region where they are grown,” said Peter Hofherr, CEO at St. James Winery. “To be able to do this in the Midwest and compete at the international level shows that our efforts to evolve our grape growing and winemaking practices are paying off.”

St. James Winery’s winning year has been led by the phenomenal performance of its Friendship School White Wine—Pacific Rim Grand Champion, 95 points at Los Angeles, and Long Beach Grand Cru Best White Wine—and its Riesling, which won the John Rose Award for the Best in Riesling at the Finger Lakes Wine Competition and was named Best of Class at Pacific Rim.

“The credit goes to our winemaking and grape growing team, led by Executive Winemaker Andrew Meggitt,” said Hofherr. “Growing grapes and making wine in the Midwest is not easy. They’ve developed innovative techniques and processes to be able to compete at this level and achieve these excellent results.”

In addition to the award winning Riesling and Friendship School White, St. James Winery’s Moscato earned Best of Class at three international competitions: Pacific Rim, Riverside, and Los Angeles. The 2013 Vignoles won two Best of Class awards: Riverside International and New World International. Friendship School Red won Best of Class at Pacific Rim.

St. James Winery at Los Angeles Wine Competition

Eight St. James Winery wines received 90 points or better, including two 97 point ratings, at the 2013 Los Angeles International Wine & Spirits Competition, held May 15 and 16 at the Los Angeles County Fair. The LA Wine & Spirits Competition uses a 100 point rating scale for gold medal winning wines.

Best of Class winners were:

  • 2012 Vignoles (97 points)
  • Friendship School White (97 points)
  • Peach (91 points)

Other gold medal award winners include:

  • Cynthiana (92 points)
  • Blackberry (90 points)
  • Blueberry (90 points)
  • Mango (90 points)
  • Raspberry (90 points)

“Our 2012 Vignoles is absolutely amazing! The exceptional quality of the wine is thanks in part to last year’s drought. The lack of rainfall resulted in pristine Vignoles grapes,” said Peter Hofherr, CEO of St. James Winery. “Our Friendship White Wine is another wine that has traditionally done well for us, and over the years it’s won quite a few Best of Class awards in wine competitions.”

“It was also gratifying to see our fruit wines continue to be standouts in wine competition, too. This year at Los Angeles, Peach led the way with the Best of Class award,” Hofherr continued, “but Blackberry, Blueberry, Mango, and Raspberry were close behind with gold medals of their own. In fact, all 16 wines St. James Winery entered in LA, won medals, and half of those were gold medals.”

The past year, 2012, proved to be another outstanding for St. James Winery in international wine competitions. For more than forty years, St. James Winery has maintained an unwavering commitment to excellence. As a result, this family owned winery is not only the most awarded winery in Missouri, once again, it’s also a one of the most awarded wineries in the United States.

“Our wines were very competitive in 2011. At the beginning of last year we hoped to do just as well in 2012,” said Peter Hofherr, CEO of St. James Winery, “but you never know because the final say goes to the wine competition judges. I’m excited to report that during 2012 we received 11 Best of Class awards, 8 double gold and 51 gold medals, plus nearly 200 additional silver or bronze medals!”

“Each year St. James Winery’s fruit wines continue to be real standouts in wine competition. We produce six fruit wines year ‘round, and every single one of those wines received multiple gold medals, and four of them – Blackberry, Peach, Raspberry, and Strawberry – received Best of Class awards,” said Hofherr. “We produce the most awarded fruit wines in the country, and because fruit wines are notoriously difficult to make, it’s safe to say St. James Winery is the premier producer of fruit wines in the US today.”

During the 2012 competition season, St. James Winery’s wines garnered a total of 11 Best of Class awards, 8 double gold, and 53 gold medals. And at the prestigious Los Angeles International Wine Competition, the only wine competition to assess point scores along with medals, St. James Winery once again this year had multiple wines scoring above 90 points: Blackberry (93/100), Country White (93/100), Cherry (92/100), Velvet White (92/100), Strawberry (90/100), Peach (90/100), and Raspberry (90/100).

“What’s really gratifying to the winemaking staff is to see wines like our St. James Winery Velvet White, one of the original wines produced here, still winning gold, double gold and best of class this year,” added Andrew Meggitt, executive winemaker at St. James Winery. “But at the same time, we’re also seeing our newer wines like Traminette or Raspberry, wines we’ve only made for a couple of years, also winning gold, double gold, and best of class.”

“Wine consumers are looking for value, the place where quality and price meet, and they’ve recognized Missouri is an emerging wine region,” said Hofherr. “St. James Winery is growing phenomenal fruit, crafting exceptional wines, and proving that great tasting wines don’t have to break your bank account.”

St. James Winery - Missouri's largest and most awarded winery

If St. James Winery were playing blackjack, it would have definitely come up a winner at the San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition by hitting 21! Twenty-one bottles of wine were shipped from St. James, Missouri to California for the competition, and when it was all said and done, each one of those bottles came home with a medal.

At this kick-off competition for the 2012 wine judging season, two of St. James Winery’s wines were honored with Best of Class Awards: Best of Class for Red Native American went to the 2009 Cynthiana, and Best of Class for Fruits went to St. James Winery’s Raspberry. The good news continued with gold medals for 2010 Seyval and Strawberry.

St. James Winery also received silver medals for its 2010 Traminette, 2010 Chardonel, 2010 Vignoles, Velvet White, Friendship School White, Blackberry, Peach, and Cherry, bringing the total of silver medals to eight. Rounding out the award-winning entries were nine bronze medals, which went to 2008 Norton, 2009 Chambourcin, Riesling, Velvet Red, Friendship School Red, Country Red, Country White, Pink Catawba, and Blueberry.

“When you send wine to a major competition like the one in San Francisco, and every single bottle comes back home with a medal,” said Peter Hofherr, CEO of St. James Winery, “that’s just a great way to start a new year! Especially when you consider that our wines were among 5,500 wines entered. This year San Francisco set a new American wine competition record for entries, and it’s the ninth consecutive year it will rank as the “Largest Competition of American Wines in the World. So, winning in San Francisco is big news!”

St. James Winery is the largest and most awarded winery in Missouri. During the 2011 competition season, St. James Winery’s won a total of nine Best of Class, five double gold, and 42 gold medals, along with 126 silver and 76 bronze medals.
