Wine of the Week: Velvet White

Our wine of the week is one of our hallmark wines, Velvet White! There’s some heritage behind this beloved wine of ours and we thought you might want to know the story behind this wonderful taste.

When St. James Winery opened in 1970, owners Jim and Pat Hofherr decided to re-establish the wine making craft in Missouri. Using the same grapes and similar wines that made the region world famous a half-century earlier by Italian immigrants, the Hofherr’s began the renaissance of wine in the Missouri Meramec Highlands. They created the now famous Velvet Red and, our wine of the week selection, Velvet White. In fact, that first year, they produce 8,000 gallons.

It’s been 48 years since then and in that time we have helped put Missouri wines back on the map. People throughout the country seek out our wine, and we have expanded to meet their demand. St. James Winery now produces 500,000 gallons of wine per year and is available for purchase in 16 different states!

It is easy to understand why Velvet White is a part of our Heritage line of products. This delightfully delicate sweet wine is a blend of the very best American and hybrid grapes. With intense fruity aromas and flavors, Velvet White is superb served chilled on its own or with a dessert like angel food cake.
