Strawberry Fields…

To get your weekend party started off right, make sure you’ve got plenty of our St. James Winery fruit wines on hand. You’ve got the beginnings of a fabulous get-together when you mix up one of our St. James Winery signature fruit wine drinks.

Try “Strawberry Fields Forever,” made with our very berry delicious Strawberry Wine. It’s a drink that’s as easy to prepare as it is delicious! You’ll need:

8-10 mint leaves
1.5 ounces limoncello
3 ounces St. James Winery Strawberry Wine
cold club soda

Muddle the mint and limoncello in a mixing glass. Fill with ice and, using a Boston shaker, give a quick shake to let the ice further break up the mint. Pour contents, ice and all, into a large wine glass. Add Strawberry wine and top off with a splash of club soda.

You can also easily make these by the pitcher! Just remember it’s one part limoncello to two parts St. James Winery Strawberry Wine. Add the club soda as you’re ready to serve them to retain the fizz.

Celebrate with Sangria

You’ve got to enjoy a celebration that features great wine drinks– that’s why we love to celebrate Cinco de Mayo with a giant vat of sangria! (Okay, maybe not a vat — perhaps we can make do with just a pitcher?)

This year, think outside the bottle with some kicky and fun sangria recipes that blend different flavors of wine (red, white, and fruit) with a wide range of fruits.

One thing they’ve all got in common:  Deliciousness!!

For another drink with a Spanish flare, try a Kalimotxo (Cocavino). This tasty blend of cola and sweet red wine actually originated in the Basque region of Spain and it’s absolutely perfect with Velvet Red!

But don’t take sangria off the menu once May 5th has passed — these recipes make for cool and delicious drinks all summer long! Try them all and then let us know which one you liked best!

St. James Winery's Velvet Red, Velvet White, and Pink Catawba in 1.5 liter twist-off cap bottles.

Three of St. James Winery’s most popular wines—Velvet Red, Velvet White, and Pink Catawba—are now available with twist-off bottle caps in the 1.5 liter size. Look for them in the wine aisles of your favorite grocery stores or wine stores this May.

Several years ago, St. James Winery became one of the first Missouri wineries to embrace twist-off cap technology for their wines. “For winemakers, twist-off caps are a godsend,” said Andrew Meggitt, executive winemaker at St. James Winery. “They provide the absolute, best possible seal for wines. If you want to control the quality of the wine, and believe me at St. James Winery we’re all about quality, then this is just so much better than traditional cork closures.”

When asked why twist-caps are important to improving quality, Meggitt replied, “Wine is an organic, changing thing, and oxygen is not its friend. Once the wine is bottled we absolutely want to keep oxygen out and flavors in. Twist-cap seals do exactly that. They’re tighter, more secure, and much more reliable. St. James Winery’s Velvet Red, Velvet White, and Pink Catawba wines are made to enjoy young, so if you want those fresh, bursting with fruit flavors, then you want twist-off caps on your wine. Not only do they keep the wine fresher in the first place, they also help with storing leftover wines to maintain the flavor of the wine.”

Another benefit Meggitt is quick to point out is the ease of opening the bottles. “There’s nothing worse than getting to your picnic spot and realizing you didn’t pack a corkscrew. With twist-caps, you don’t need any special tools, and they’re a snap to open. Grab a 1.5 liter bottle of Pink Catawba, twist the neck sleeve – not the cap itself – counter-clockwise, and it’s open in a second.”

Taste the Good Earth

Wine is the fruit of the vine…and at St. James Winery those vines get their start in the fertile soil of our Missouri vineyards. Here at the winery, we see ourselves as caretakers of a legacy–staying close to the earth, tending the grapes, and improving our vineyards.

Taste the terroir of the Ozark Highlands with St. James Winery’s 2008 Reserve Norton, which features estate grown Norton grapes, sourced from a single block in our vineyards, Block 14.

This elegantly structured wine is a dark reddish purple color with aromas of fresh berry fruit and cocoa powder. The palate is vibrant with flavors of vanilla, fresh berry, oak and a hint of bittersweet chocolate. Pair with grilled lamb or venison.

Aged in oak for 18 months, the Norton has mellowed and is ready to drink now or be cellared and enjoyed in years to come.

“We’re really excited about our new Satisfy Your Sweet program, because it reflects exactly what St. James Winery is all about, satisfying your taste for sweet wines with high quality and high value,” said Peter Hofherr, CEO of St. James Winery. “The sweet wines in this program—Velvet Red, Velvet White, Pink Catawba, Country Red, and Country White—have won nearly 500 awards in just the past 5 years alone.”

Satisfy Your Sweet reflects St. James Winery’s dedication to spot-on flavor in every single bottle of wine they make.  “Delivering on quality is really important to us, especially in light of a recent study that proves people who prefer sweet wines actually have the highest level of taste sensitivity,” said Hofherr. “Here at the winery we work hard to make sure our sweet wines delivers consistent flavor from bottle to bottle, year in, year out. That consistency is one of the reasons our sweet wine fans are so devoted to our sweet wines. Our fans are tremendous brand ambassadors for us, and we love them for it.”

Cheers to You

Ever hear the dreaded words, “We’d like you to deliver the toast…”?

Fear not!  St. James Winery’s got you covered.

We’ve pulled together some all-purpose toasts to get you through  your duties as Best Man, Maid of Honor, or Banquet MC.

May you have warm words on a cold evening, a full moon on a dark night,
and a smooth road all the way to your door.

May the luck of the Irish lead to happiest heights,
And the highway you travel be lined with green lights.

As you slide down the banisters of life,
may the splinters never point the wrong way.

As you ramble through life, whatever be your goal,
keep your eye upon the donut and not upon the hole.

May the most you wish for be the least you get;
may the best times you’ve ever had be the worst you ever know.

Save them for the next time you’re called upon to deliver a toast!

Cheers!

Let’s Get Saucy!

Spring it right around the corner on the calendar, and here in St. James, Missouri, it’s in the yards, too. All those blooming crocus and daffodils have gotten us feeling just a little bit saucy.

Good thing it’s National Sauce Month!

Dive in to great wine sauce recipes this month. Here are a couple to get you started thinking.

With first of the season strawberries arriving in the markets, our Strawberry Wine Sauce will be great for drizzling over pound cake or angel food cake, crème brulee, or ice cream. The sauce is a simple combination of frozen and berries, sugar, cornstarch, and our Strawberry Wine.

Our Blueberry Reduction Sauce uses reduction to create the sauce instead of a thickening agent. Combine fresh or frozen blueberries with sugar and Blueberry Wine in a saucepan and boil until the sauce reduces. (Remember reduction sauces continue to thicken after they leave the heat.) Why not try this one over waffles or pancakes during a lazy Saturday morning breakfast?

Just don’t let the recipes names fool you because these sauce ideas are only the start! Change it up by substituting any of our other fruit wines: Blackberry, Cherry, Raspberry or Peach.
